When planning for our holidays, we often find ourselves stocking up on "just in case" items", such as anti-histamine tables anti-diarrhoea pills, sun creams, travel sickness pills, pain killers, antiseptic wipes and such like. You just never know when you might take ill or have an accident.
Same goes for your dog. I am often asked, "what should I take for precautions and emergencies for my dog when I go on holiday?" This is a list of my own "Just in case" items that I take for my dogs on holiday.
The things that I take with me as my standard precautionary travel kit are:
- Digestive tablets in case of travel sickness
- Liquid Garlic in case of insect bites or cuts
- Veterinary wound powder in case of deep cuts that bleed badly
- Homeopathic remedy Merc Viv in case of the runs
- A tick picker to remove the little pests if need be
- I also carry some Crisis Elixir just in case of accidents, panic or trauma, just to keep the dogs settled and calm. (Also good for human trauma and stress.) This can also be used for travel stress
- Alternatively you can use the herbal remedy Scullcap and Valerian to keep your pet calm for travelling
One thing that I always use when travelling in the heat is a Cooldana mat. This is filled with gel crystals that you soak in water. Then you can put the mat in to your car or travel crate. It can be used anywhere indoors or out for the dog to lie on. This keeps them cool, and in the car it also makes the air a little more moist which cools the temperature down.
I always find that using an Adjustable Window Vent helps to let in fresh air (and it discourages people from sticking their hands into the car).
Another thing that is very popular with our show dog customers when they need to keep their dogs in a parked vehicle is a crate-cooling fan. If you have a travel crate this just hooks on to the side. It works by battery and provides cool air to the dog.
